Carolyn Monastra home portfolios info contact The Witness Tree is a series of photographs focusing on landscapes that are being affected by climate change. I plan to spend the next year documenting sites around the world that are both currently affected by and those that are threatened by climate change and will also include sites that are contributing to these changes. I am targeting locations that represent a diversity of natural environments and cultures to demonstrate that this is indeed a global epidemic. From the melting Arctic ice cap to wild fires in Australia, I have selected places that will represent how geographically widespread the climate crisis is. This project was initially inspired by an artists residency I did in Iceland in 2009. Recently I began photographing sites near my home on the East Coast. Over the spring and summer I will be photographing locations in the Midwest, West Coast and Southeast. In the fall I will begin my travels abroad.
